I really liked the picture I used as a reference - how Keanu's hair is so tangled up and his expression so peaceful. The Keanu Reeves pic took ages to draw and, honestly, it could've turned out a lot better in half the time if I had followed some portrait drawing guidelines... Still, I like it enough to post it here and in a few other places.










Comments on style

I am trying to improve my skills in doing pencil portraits and by sketching Keanu Reeves, I realized something important: It's better to sketch the facial features first and then try to draw the exact shape of the face. Otherwise the picture might look odd, because when the features haven't taken shape yet, you might not be able to get the form of the face right. So, the steps to for drawing a portrait are as follows.

How to draw portraits

  • Get a good reference picture of the subject.
  • Measure proportions of face.
  • Determine angle of the face (people rarely face 100% forward; the face is often tilted to the left or right, if only slightly.)
  • Find three words to describe the expression of the person and keep them in mind. In this case: Keanu Reeves is looking: peaceful, indifferent, passive.
  • Make guides on the paper of the above observations. (shape of face, angle of face, position of individual features)
  • After you've done all this work, you can start drawing the features (with a SHARP pencil). I tend to do the eyes first. I find lips extremely hard to draw, probably because I can't fully grasp their form yet. Oh, and masculine hairlines.
  • When you're done with drawing and shading, do check if the expression your drawing has corresponds to the three words you'd found to describe the person in the beginning.
