Emo Songs - How to Spot them

Characteristics of Emo Songs Labels are very important to modern teens so a true emo fan should only listen to love songs that comply with some specific guidelines. Say you have heard a love song and are not sure whether it's emo or not. Then, you can use the following checklist to decide if the song is truly emo or just a petty imitation. Is the song by some famous emo band like My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessional or Thursday? Does the song have very long yet pointless title? Excellent examples: "It's not a Fashion Statement, It's a Fucking Deathwish" or even "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage" which, despite their lenght, do not give you the slightest clue what the song's really about! Are the lyrics poetic, abstract or otherwise really hard to decipher? Is the song about lost love and broken hearts? And the meaning of the universe? At the same time? Is the singer wallowing in self-pity? Does the singer sound like s/he is about to burst out crying? Does s/he do it at some point? If you've answered yes to more than 5 of this questions it is guaranteed that the song you're listening to is indeed purely emo. Congratualtions on spotting an emo song - we really hope you don't sing it to your sweetheart this Valentine's Day. If you think we're trying to offend you, think again.
